Handcrafted in our Essex workshop from one slab of English Elm measuring 3000 × 1100 × 50mm, this dining tabletop is not made from multiple planks, joined boards or bookmatched slabs. The entire top comes from one continuous section of timber.

The slab comes from an English Elm tree believed to be approximately 700 years old. English Elm of this length and width in a single piece is extraordinarily uncommon: finding another slab capable of producing a genuine 3m × 1.1m single-slab table may only happen once every 20–30 years. Even by our standards, it is one of the most remarkable English Elm slabs we have ever encountered.

Most large dining tables, including many premium examples, are created by joining several boards together. While there is nothing wrong with this approach, it simply cannot replicate the visual impact of a true single slab. The grain flows uninterrupted from end to end, with figure, movement and character throughout, and the live edges preserve the natural outline of the original tree. Each contour, knot, ripple and grain pattern tells part of the story of a tree that stood for centuries before being transformed into this extraordinary table.

For collectors, designers and those seeking the absolute pinnacle of British hardwood furniture, this represents a genuinely rare opportunity. This is not simply a dining table. It is a piece of natural history transformed into functional art, a centrepiece designed to be enjoyed today and passed down through future generations.

Tabletop Only, Choose Your Own Base

This listing is for the tabletop only, allowing you to pair it with any suitable steel leg or pedestal base design from our collection.

The important difference is that we don't simply send you a tabletop and a separate box of legs.

Once you've chosen your base, we fabricate it specifically around this individual tabletop, optimising its dimensions and position for stability, legroom and the proportions of the finished table. We then professionally fit the base to the tabletop in our Essex workshop before delivery.

When your table arrives, the mounting points are already prepared and everything has been test fitted, making final assembly straightforward.

A Genuine One-Off Tabletop

Every mark, grain pattern, natural edge and variation belongs to this individual tree. Unlike a tabletop assembled from numerous narrow boards, there is nothing interrupting the grain across its width.

It is this combination of scale, uninterrupted grain and natural live edges that makes a genuine single-slab dining table such a statement piece.

Handcrafted in Essex

The tabletop is prepared and finished by hand in our Essex workshop by Sam Sorrell and our team, with no mass production and no robotic machinery.

Choose from our range of bespoke steel legs and pedestal bases, including X-frame, trapezium and statement pedestal designs. Our steel bases are fabricated specifically to suit the proportions and weight of your chosen tabletop and can be powder coated in matt black or a colour of your choice.

Every stage has been completed by hand in our Essex workshop by Sam Sorrell, from preparing and flattening the slab through to shaping, finishing and final detailing, with the same level of care and attention that has become synonymous with Sorrell & Smith. There is no mass production, no automated manufacturing line and no compromise: just traditional craftsmanship applied to one of the finest English Elm slabs we have ever seen.
