This extraordinary dining table has been handcrafted by Sam Sorrell from a single colossal slab of English Elm measuring an impressive 3 metres long by 1.1 metres wide.

Unlike almost every large dining table on the market, this piece is not constructed from multiple planks, joined boards, or bookmatched slabs. The entire tabletop comes from one continuous section of timber, preserving uninterrupted grain patterns and character across its full length and width.

The slab originated from an exceptionally rare English Elm tree believed to be approximately 700 years old. Opportunities to acquire timber of this age, scale, and quality are extraordinarily uncommon. In reality, finding another English Elm slab capable of producing a genuine 3m x 1.1m dining table may only happen once every 20–30 years.

A Once-in-a-Generation English Elm Slab

Most large dining tables, including many premium examples, are created by joining several boards together. While there is nothing wrong with this approach, it simply cannot replicate the visual impact of a true single slab.

Here, the grain flows uninterrupted from end to end. The natural contours of the tree remain visible along the live edges, while centuries of growth have created remarkable figure, movement, and character throughout the timber.

For collectors, designers, and those seeking the absolute pinnacle of British hardwood furniture, this represents a genuinely rare opportunity.

Every stage of the process has been completed by hand in our Essex workshop. From preparing and flattening the slab through to shaping, finishing, and final detailing, this table has received the same level of care and attention that has become synonymous with Sorrell & Smith.

There is no mass production, no automated manufacturing line, and no compromise. Just traditional craftsmanship applied to one of the finest English Elm slabs we have ever seen.
