Choosing dining chairs for a solid wood table

A good dining chair has to do more than look right. It is pulled out several times a day, leaned back on and expected to stay comfortable for years, so construction, comfort and proportion all matter.

That is why we don't list hundreds of chairs. We make our tables ourselves and source chairs from established furniture makers, choosing designs that work particularly well with solid oak and elm, both visually and practically.

We pay close attention to seat height and knee clearance, and to chair width, which matters most when fitting six, eight or ten chairs around a table, as well as how each finish looks beside a natural timber top.

Will these chairs suit my Sorrell & Smith table?
Yes. We choose chairs with a standard dining-table height of around 75–76cm in mind, checking seat height, knee clearance and overall proportions. You will find the exact dimensions on each chair's page. If your table is being made to a custom height or size, get in touch and we will recommend the best chairs for it.
How are the chairs sold?
Most designs are supplied as boxed pairs, so a quantity of 1 means two chairs. A few are sold individually or as sets of four; each chair's page states its unit clearly next to the price.
How much is chair delivery?
Delivery is £29 on an order of a single pair or set. Order 2 or more and delivery is free, and the price per pair comes down too, because one delivery covers the whole order. Order your chairs with a Sorrell & Smith dining table and there is no separate chair delivery charge.
How long does delivery take?
Dining chairs are typically delivered within 1–2 weeks. They are delivered separately from our made-to-order tables, so they may arrive before your table.
Do I need to assemble the chairs?
It depends on the design. Some arrive fully assembled; others need simple self-assembly, usually just bolting the legs on. Each chair's page says which.
What height dining chair works with a 75cm table?
Most dining tables are around 75–76cm high, and dining-chair seats are commonly around 45–48cm. The important measurement is the gap between the seat and the underside of the table top or frame, which we check when choosing chairs for the collection.
How many dining chairs will fit around my table?
It depends on the chair width as well as the length and leg position of your table. As a general guide, allow around 55–60cm of table length per person for comfortable everyday dining. Tell us your table size and we will advise on the right number of chairs.
