Legs or a base?

Legs

A pair of frames, or a set of four legs, that screw straight to the underside of your top. Made for wooden and live-edge tops.

Base with rails

A pair of legs joined by connecting rails, so it stands rigid on its own. The one to choose for stone or glass tops, and for long or heavy tables.

Pedestal base

One central base with no legs at the corners. Made for round and square tables, with the most legroom.

Handmade in the UK

Cut, welded and ground smooth by hand in solid steel, then powder coated, so each base looks like a single piece of metal.

Bespoke steel table legs, made in the UK

Sorrell & Smith makes steel table legs and table bases to order from Wickford in Essex. Every set is cut, welded and ground smooth by hand from solid steel, then powder coated, so it looks like a single piece of metal and carries a heavy slab without flexing.

Choose a clean industrial steel table leg (X-frame, trapezium, box or A-frame), a cut-out slab leg, or a sculptural designer table base that becomes the centrepiece of the room. Any design can be made bespoke: a different height, width or length, a wider frame for a deep top, or any RAL colour, at no extra cost.

Can you make the legs to my size?

Yes. Every set is handmade to order, and we can make the legs or base to any size you need at no extra cost. Put your table size and thickness in the notes when you order, or get in touch first if you would like us to check.

How long do they take, and what does delivery cost?

They are handmade to order in the UK and delivered in 3–4 weeks. Delivery to the UK and the EU is free on almost every design; where it is not, the design page says so and the cost is shown at checkout.

Which colours can I choose?

Most designs come in matt black, matt white, greys, golds and clear-coated steel, and in any RAL colour: choose "Any RAL colour" and put the RAL code in the notes. Clear coat gives a bare-steel look with a protective finish. Every set is powder coated or clear coated, never left as bare steel.

Should I choose legs or a base?

Legs (a pair, or a set of four) fix straight to the underside of your top and are made for wooden tops. Bases stand on their own: a base with rails is a pair of legs joined by connecting rails, so it stands rigid on its own: choose it for stone or glass tops, and for long or heavy tables. A pedestal base sits in the middle, which suits round and square tables and leaves the most legroom.

How do the legs fix to my tabletop?

Choose your tabletop when you order and we make the fixings to suit: slotted holes for wooden tops, so the timber can move with the seasons, standard holes for stone, and flat pads for stone or glass.

Will they take a heavy slab, stone or glass top?

Yes, on the right base. For stone and glass tops we recommend a base with connecting rails (or a pedestal) rather than two separate legs, which are only really suitable for wooden tables. Each design page lists the load the standard size is made for; for very long or heavy tops tell us the size and weight so we can advise. Need the glass too? We make toughened glass tops to any size and shape.

Yes. If you have a design in mind that is not shown here, send us a sketch or a photo with your sizes and we will quote for it.

What height should my table legs be?

Standard dining table legs are 71 cm, which with a 3–5 cm top gives a table about 75 cm high. Coffee table legs are usually 35–45 cm, and bar and counter tables 90–105 cm. We make any height, so tell us the finished table height you want and the thickness of your top.

Which legs are best for a marble, stone or sintered stone table?

Choose a base with connecting rails or a pedestal base. Stone, marble, quartz and sintered stone are heavy and can crack if they are only supported at the ends, so the rails or a wide pedestal carry the top evenly. We make the fixing pads to suit, and can advise on the right base for your top size and weight.
