The timber

Slabs most makers never get to see.

Every table starts with the tree. We buy whole logs and ultra-wide single slabs: English elm from trees that stood for centuries, French oak cut from one tree so the grain runs the length of the table, burr oak up to a metre and a half wide in a single piece, and American black walnut in widths rarely seen in this country.

Each slab is kiln-dried to 8 % moisture or below before we touch it, so your table stays flat and silent for decades. When you order a table we tell you where the tree grew, when it was felled and how it was seasoned, and we photograph the exact slabs we have chosen for you before a single cut is made.

Choosing your wood: the ordering guide

Pair any top with a base

Legs engineered like buildings.

A slab this heavy deserves a base that will never flex. Ours are fabricated in our own workshop from box section up to 100 × 100 mm with 4 mm walls, the kind of steel usually found holding up a roof, then powder-coated in any RAL colour you choose. Every base is made to the exact size of your top, whether that top is made to order or one from stock.

All base designs

Going bespoke: how it works.

A made-to-order table is simpler than people expect. The ordering guide does most of the explaining; we do the rest, and keep you in the picture at every stage.

  1. 1Read the ordering guideIt walks you through the woods, the sizes, the base styles and the finishes, with photographs of each. Most people know what they want by the end of it.
  2. 2Tell us what you needThe size, the wood, the base and the finish. Not sure? We advise: allow 60 cm per diner, and 120 cm wide for a table that seats people in comfort.
  3. 3We choose your slabsWe pick the slabs for your table from the stock in our workshop and photograph them for you before a single cut is made. Three to four weeks on the bench.
  4. 4Delivered to your doorWhen your table is ready we call to arrange a day and time that suits you, and deliver it anywhere in the UK. Delivery is free on orders over £1,000.

The workshop

Two founders. One workshop. Every table.

Sorrell & Smith was founded in 2020 by master craftsman Sam Sorrell and Corey Smith. Every table, base, shelf and mirror we sell is made in our own workshop in Essex, and Sam makes or oversees each one personally. Nothing is bought in and badged.

That is why a Sorrell & Smith table is finished like a piece of jewellery: sanded through every grade and brought up to a flawless matt or high-gloss finish, so the first thing guests do is run a hand along it.
