Browse examples of tables, worktops, desks and other bespoke pieces we've made in our Essex workshop.

We've organised the gallery by timber species so you can compare the colour, grain and character of each wood. Select a timber below to see more examples of our previous work.

French Oak

French Oak is our most popular timber and works well for everything from dining tables and desks to large boardroom tables and kitchen worktops.

It has a warm, natural colour with a generally straighter and more consistent grain than many of the more characterful timbers we use. We can select cleaner slabs for a more contemporary finish or timber with more knots and natural character if preferred.

English Elm

English Elm has considerably more variation and character than French Oak, with sweeping grain, darker figuring, burr and natural colour variation.

Large English Elm trees are increasingly difficult to source, particularly in the widths needed for furniture. We keep a selection of large slabs in stock and regularly use Elm for bookmatched and single-slab tables.

Colour
Warm amber to darker brown
Character
Strong grain, figuring and occasional burr
Good for
Statement dining tables, large desks and single-slab pieces

Pippy Oak / Burr Oak

Pippy and Burr Oak are chosen when the natural character of the timber is intended to be a major part of the finished piece.

Pippy Oak contains clusters of small knots and figuring, while Burr Oak can have much heavier grain, voids and irregular natural edges. Larger voids and cracks can be filled with clear, black or coloured epoxy resin where required.

We also occasionally source very large Burr Oak slabs suitable for single-slab tables.

Mappa Burr

Mappa Burr, also known as Pippy Poplar, is one of the lightest timbers we work with and has a very distinctive burr pattern across the surface.

The colour is generally pale cream to light honey, making it particularly suitable for lighter interiors where darker species such as Elm or Walnut would be too heavy.

American Black Walnut

American Black Walnut is naturally much darker than Oak or Elm, with deep brown tones, fine grain and lighter sapwood often visible around the natural edge.

We use genuine American Black Walnut and can source wide boards for dining tables, desks, worktops and larger bespoke pieces.

Fine grain with natural colour variation and lighter sapwood

Yew

English Yew is one of the most distinctive timbers we work with. It has strong colour variation between the orange-red heartwood and much lighter sapwood, often with natural voids, inclusions and irregular grain.

Because Yew rarely grows in large, straight sections, tables often require careful slab selection, bookmatching and resin work.

Colour
Orange, red, brown and cream
Character
Strong colour variation, irregular grain and natural voids
Good for
One-off statement pieces and resin tables

English Ash

English Ash is a pale timber with an open, flowing grain. Some slabs also contain darker olive or brown heartwood, which can create considerable variation through the finished top.

It's a good option where a customer wants a lighter finished piece without the warmer colouring of Oak.

Colour
Pale cream to blonde
Character
Open grain with occasional darker heartwood

Cedar of Lebanon

Cedar of Lebanon is particularly useful when very wide or large slabs are required. Mature trees can produce dimensions that are difficult to achieve in most other species.

It has a relatively light pink/blonde colour and a more uniform grain than highly figured timbers such as Elm or Burr Oak.

Cedar is softer than Oak, Elm or Walnut, so we'll normally discuss the intended use before recommending it.

Colour
Pink to pale blonde
Character
Relatively even grain and very wide slabs
Good for
Large dining tables, conference tables and oversized single-slab pieces
